We all know the stereotype of a trophy wife-- an attractive woman who is married to a rich man. Now science says the trophy wife is basically just a mythical creature.
Researchers looked at a nationally representative sample of couples and found that "handsome men partner with pretty women and successful men partner with successful women." Also, it was fairly rare for an attractive woman from a lower social class to move upward via marriage, and men are just as likely to do so.
Lead researcher Elizabth McClintock says that high-status men do have more attractive wives on average, but it's because they are also considered more attractive than their less successful counterparts. McClintock acknowledges that "trophy wife" couples do exist, but that they are the exception, not the rule.
