Those Red Bumps on Your Arms

It's probably Keratosis Pilaris...Those tiny red bumps on your arms (or shoulders, or back, or thighs) that look like chicken skin, and won't go away. Its a kind of eczema, and about 40% of us deal with those buggers.

Dry winter weather aggravates the condition, but heat and humidity can also trigger the issue, which is no good for swimsuits and sundresses! Trouble is those bumps aren't easy to get rid of and there is no cure.

What you should NOT do is pick, which can leave scarring, or over-scrub, which can leave you with bumps that are now irritated and red. Try these options to help your skin look, and feel, smoother:

1- Chemical exfoliators: Both glycolic acid and lactic acid can help, Try: Vivité Exfoliating Cleanser with 15% glycolic acid.

2- Retinoids: Topical retinoids help by going below the surface of skin to exfoliate cells. Try SkinMedica Retinol Complex 1.0 (over-the-counter.)

3- Sunscreen: Sun can aggravate keratosis pilaris. Sunscreen won’t prevent it, but can really help keep bumps from getting worse.

4- Gentle cleansing: Harsh soaps can dry out skin and worsen the problem. Use a hydrating, detergent free, soap like Aveeno Skin Relief Body Wash.

5- Moisturize: Hydrating moisturizer will soften the feel and look of bumps. Moisturize your bumpy areas within a minute of getting out of the shower.
